Background – guiding the council through the new developments
Project Centre worked with the London Borough of Lewisham to boost the health and safety as well as the economy of their local environment. Lewisham is undergoing significant changes with more developments in the pipeline. The Council’s goal was to create a sustainable and lively urban space for existing residents, driving new visitors and the community’s growth.
Lewisham presented a hostile environment for pedestrians and cyclists, lacking open spaces and nighttime economy. Our multidisciplinary team worked collaboratively to improve sustainable transport connections, increasing footway space and cycle stands. We reshaped Lewisham’s market and high streets into a vibrant environment, supporting the growth of local shops and services.
Process – how we created a sustainable urban space
Our design strategy focused on three key areas: Lewisham Market, the high street and the creation of a new culture and business hub.
We provided a robust public realm for the community in Lewisham, by:
- Creating better pedestrian and cyclists infrastructure
- Enhancing the existing public realm, making it sustainable and safer for vulnerable road users
- Increasing biodiversity and seating planters to improve air quality and attractiveness
- Developing a welcoming urban space as well as improving public art, waymarking and street lighting
As a key part of our design strategy, our expert team identified connections between the existing infrastructure and the new developments. We joined these dots to create a safer and healthier environment without losing its previous identity.
