Sustainable Transport

Low carbon initiatives

Transport counts for a fifth of the UK’s carbon emissions and local authorities have been set new key performance indicators to measure their efforts in reducing emissions from their own operations (KPI 185) and for reducing per capita emissions in their area (KPI 186).

Project Centre is helping local authorities to reduce carbon emissions from transport by helping them introduce and develop car clubs, electric vehicle charging points, green travel plans and innovative low carbon initiatives such as a pilot low-car neighbourhood.

We are currently working on a pilot project that will reward residents who reduce their dependence on the private car by introducing environmental improvements to their street. The scheme will introduce car club parking spaces so that residents still have access to a car for journeys when it is the most suitable means of transport.

Project Centre and Islington Council jointly won the environment award at this year’s British Parking Awards where our research showed that introducing and expanding existing car clubs is the most cost effective way of reducing boroughs’ per capita carbon emissions from transport.
