International Women in Engineering Day 2018

International Women in Engineering Day 2018

International Women in Engineering Day takes place tomorrow (23 June) and focuses attention on the amazing careers in engineering and technical roles for women, and allows us to celebrate the achievements of our outstanding female engineers. Here at Project Centre we are proud to support, develop and raise the profile of our talented female staff.

Currently women make up less than 11% of the engineering sector ( We are delighted that we are exceeding the average with 23% of our staff being female. Not only are they female but they have leading roles in our company from Associate Directors to Landscape Architects and Principal Engineers, managing multimillion pound projects such as flood and water management, public realm design and traffic schemes.

Whilst we recognise how far we have come in the space of a few years there is still more work to do at targeting women in the engineering industry. Here’s what we’re doing:

  • We are so excited to be working with students from Central Foundation Girls’ School in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets on a traffic and public realm scheme for Harley Grove. Whilst this project ultimately aims to improve safety it has been great for the team to work with and inspire the young women to get involved in engineering and showcase potential career options they may not have previously thought about.

The students have been involved from the start. We met with them to understand their concerns and the issues they face. The students then went onsite with the designers, carrying out parking surveys and looking at different options and road layouts. Together we have created a design that meets their needs; encouraging good driver behaviour, promoting road safety and making the environment look nicer to benefit everyone in the street. The students have since presented their ideas to the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, and these are now out for consultation with local residents and businesses.

  • We actively encourage women to apply for jobs with us through targeted recruitment. We have a number of vacancies available and are always on the lookout for talented engineers to join us so send your CV to if you are interested. We offer a family friendly environment, flexible working arrangements, and have offices in London, Slough and Brighton.

  • We encourage growth and development as soon as employees start with us and throughout their career, from our graduate scheme up to Charterships. We have a number of young females working their way up the ladder, supported by the right training and mentors.
